Scenic cycle route from Epe to Deventer
Deventer, Epe, Olst
This cycle route gives you the best of several worlds: the rough forests around Epe, the green forelands of the river IJssel and the beautiful historical centre of Hanseatic city Deventer. Picturesque views guaranteed!
Along the way, you pass fun, varied sights, all with a rich history. Take the Olsterveer to the Bökkers Mölle in Olst, which has been there since 1729. Did you know that this mill even survived a German bomb during World War II? Fortunately, the bomb had caused little damage.
Nowadays, you can visit the mill for its artisanal bakery where the bakers still make the bread by hand. You can taste it in the shop or in the restaurant.
In the outskirts of Olst you will find two historic country houses. Kasteel De Haere was built around 1559, after which the Van Oldeneel family moved in. Groot Hoenlo Castle was home to several noble families. Writer Harry Mülisch also lived in this national monument.
The historical highlight is, of course, Deventer. The narrow streets in the city centre and the monumental buildings with special facades make you feel like you are walking in an old movie. Visit the Proosdij, the oldest stone dwelling house in the Netherlands (12th century!), and admire the Lebuinus Church. Or put your bike away for a while to stroll down Walstraat. This street is full of cosy shops with unique products.
