In the Middle Ages, people already lived where Hardenberg is now, and their traces are still visible today. For instance, you pass the old city wall, which was presumably built around 1230. Back then, Hardenberg was slightly higher than today, but considerably smaller. The lower edge of the town then had a town wall, which disappeared under the sand during a later expansion and was built over with houses. Part of this old wall has been excavated and lies near the Stephanus church. The Stephanus church, slightly younger than the city wall, was built around 1362. Although little remains of this original church, the current building dates from 1848. Inside, some documents dating back to the earliest years have been preserved, and the church bells date back to the 16th century. Nearby Gramsbergen also has a long history. Archaeological finds of prehistoric artefacts show that people lived here as early as around 8000 BC. Due to its favourable location on the river Vecht, Gramsbergen played a small but strategic role in trade between the Hanseatic cities. As you cycle through the narrow streets, you will see numerous historic farms and characteristic old houses, which still exude the atmosphere of days gone by.
