While cycling, discover the rich history of the small hamlets of Gortel, Niersen and Tongeren in Gelderland. People lived here thousands of years ago. Proof of this are the many burial mounds from the Neolithic and Bronze Age, which can be found scattered through the area. Indeed, between Epe and Niersen lies the longest burial mound row in Europe! Want to visit one? We have added some to the route: with a little detour, you can check them out. The Celtic Fields are another such archaeological monument. These prehistoric castellated fields are still visible in the landscape today. We travel a few centuries further. As you cycle into Gortel, you are immersed in the nostalgic atmosphere of anno 1900. This small village proudly bears the status of a protected townscape, because of its authentic appearance and historical value. Queen Wilhelmina visited Gortel regularly and had a special bond with the area. As a token of appreciation, the royal family bought the land and buildings in the village. In return, the community promised to preserve the heritage. The farms, forest houses and the cosy little school, which also serves as a church, show the village as it once was. Like one big open-air museum! You can extend your route through the woods in Tongeren with a trip on the plank path. The estate is a special piece of peatland in the otherwise rather dry landscape of the Veluwe. Although... Once past Tongeren, you cycle along beautiful, winding streams and springs back to the starting point in Vaassen. Before your time journey is over, you will pass another magnificent historic building: Farm complex Geelmolen. Visit the old farmhouse with water mill and water pump, still perfectly in the state as it was once built in 1911.
