The Haarlemmermeer region offers not only beautiful landscapes, but also a rich history and interesting sights. You will cycle through vast polders, along waterways and through lively towns. The historic pumping stations you encounter here are unique in the world and offer an insight into Dutch hydraulic engineering and how the Haarlemmermeer was drained. During this route you will cycle through Nieuw-Vennep and Hoofddorp, two bustling cities. In Hoofddorp you will find several restaurants, cafes and stores, while Nieuw-Vennep is known for its green surroundings and beautiful parks. We start at Pumping Station Leeghwater in Buitenkaag, named after the famous Dutch hydraulic engineer who had an important role in draining the Haarlemmermeer. Here we start our tour through the beautiful polder landscape. The Halfweg Steam Pumping Station is another important pumping station in the region. This pumping station, built in 1852, is the largest pumping station in the world powered by a steam engine. It was used to pump the water from the Haarlemmermeer to the IJ to keep the polder dry. You can also visit the Cruquius pumping station, which has been converted into a museum. Here you will learn all about the history of the Haarlemmermeer and the important role of the pumping station in draining the polder.
