Markelo, Lochem, Diepenheim
Markelo is one of the oldest villages in Twente. Its history dates back to prehistoric times, and we know this thanks to a number of archaeological finds. In addition, a deed from 1188 already mentions a ‘Merclo’. This written reference and the burial mounds from the Bronze and Iron Age point to a very early habitation of this area. The name Markelo derives from the fact that it had one of the earliest marken (medieval communities with jointly managed territory). Marken meetings often took place at the famous ‘Dikke Steen’, a boulder that served as a courthouse or meeting point at the time. The fine variety of rolling countryside, forest, heathland and vast countryside also makes Markelo a wonderful setting for cycling. And you will discover even more on the route. How about the mysterious art town of Diepenheim, or the historic centre of Lochem? Here, admire the 7th-century Sint-Guluda Church, the 19th-century Synagogue and the narrow alleys and buildings. This area is home to many beautiful country houses and castles. In addition, this is truly a farming area and thus many vestiges of ‘old-fashioned farming’ can be found.
