Cycle through one of the most castle-rich regions in the Netherlands, where history, nature and culture come together. This 38-kilometre route takes you through the varied landscape of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, with rolling forests, stately lanes and quiet paths through old fields and estates. Between Zeist, Doorn, Driebergen and Odijk, you’ll discover a region once ruled by noble families, military leaders, garden designers and religious communities. Along the way you’ll pass castles, country houses, arboreta and museums – each with its own story. One remarkable historical figure who left his mark here is German Emperor Wilhelm II. After abdicating the throne in November 1918, he first stayed at Amerongen Castle, where he officially signed his abdication on 28 November. In May 1920, he moved to Huis Doorn, where he lived in exile until his death in 1941. During his time there, Wilhelm II brought over many of his personal belongings from Germany, turning Huis Doorn into a time capsule of his imperial past. Many of the places along the route have their own stories – some even with surprising international links. That makes this region not only beautiful to ride through, but also fascinating to learn about. You’re not just passing castles or old buildings – you get a glimpse into the lives of those who lived, worked or even hid here. Between the Heuvelrug and the Kromme Rijn, a landscape unfolds that reveals more than you might expect at first glance.
