A piece of the peat route on a bicycle

As early as the 16th century, the waterways were created which were used by boatmen to transport peat to the west of Friesland. The Turfroute is a navigable route some 105 km long and passes by various old stories, locks and special sights. This cycle route is a shortened version of the peat route and takes you past all these points, only by bike path. Among other things, admire the beautiful peatlands, the museum mill and the locks on the route. This region is not only known for its peat, but is also part of the Frisian Waterline. This line originated in the 17th century and consists of several defence works in the form of entrenchments. These were positioned in strategic places where there was a passage between the peat. However, the entrenchments predate the Frisian Water Line: in fact, they were already placed during the Eighty Years' War. One of these entrenchments has been found in Makkinga.
