Explore the surroundings of the former mining village of Veenendaal. This route takes you through sloping landscapes and quiet forests with a wealth of historical buildings such as mills and country houses. Start your route at TOP Amerongen which lies on the border of two beautiful natural and cultural landscapes: the Utrechtse Heuvelrug and the Kromme Rijnstreek. In the nearby tobacco barn on the Amerongse Berg is the information centre of Utrechts Landschap and Nationaal Park Utrechtse Heuvelrug. The route takes you past Huize Scherpenzeel. In the 14th century there was already a fortified house on the site of this house. Halfway through the 19th century, the house took on the form it still has today. A modest, symmetrical and graceful house. The surrounding park is about six hectares in size and was laid out in the English landscape style. Huize Scherpenzeel served for a number of years as the town hall, but today the house is owned by the Friends of the Castles of Gelderland Foundation. The surrounding estate has always remained family property. Throughout the centuries, the house has been both a Utrecht and a Gelderlander property, as it was situated on the border of Gelre and the Utrecht region. After Huize Scherpenzeel, you pass various places to stay overnight. This is ideal if you want to stay a little longer in the region and discover a lot more of the surroundings. You then come to Fort aan de Buursteeg, an attractive starting point for discovering the Grebbelinie. Here you will also find the Grebbelinie Visitor Centre where you can dive into the story of this historic waterline.
