Cycle route Westerpark and Biesland

Zoetermeer's Westerpark is the city's largest park. There is plenty to do here: from sports fields, a golf course and a bowling alley to picnic areas and playgrounds. You will also find a special nature garden. The area further alternates with woods, flower fields, grasslands and wooded banks. A lovely place to cycle through with the whole family! Let the children play on the lawns while you enjoy delicious snacks on a picnic blanket, or hire a boat to discover nature from the water. Then get back on your bike to explore the Biesland. Until 1795, this area was a so-called ambachtsheerlijkheid; a small administrative unit in the countryside. This former marshland was reclaimed into polders during the Middle Ages. The Bieslandse polder, for instance, dates back to 1450. In that year, a quay was constructed on the north side of the polder, which we still know today as the Noordkade in Pijnacker. The land was used for arable farming and cattle breeding. Nowadays, the polders are still used for dairy farming, so cows you will definitely encounter here! Much attention is paid to preserving the original nature. The different landscapes, such as flowery meadows, marshes, water pools and arable land, alternate and together form a beautiful mosaic. The diversity in turn attracts bird species such as the spoonbill, kingfisher, black-tailed godwit and shore swallow. Butterflies also find the fields interesting. This route takes you along the border between the Bieslandse Bos and De Balij nature reserve. Besides the green polders and parks, you will also pass through the lively centre of Zoetermeer. Get off your bike here to see the characteristic houses, browse around the shops or enjoy a delicious lunch on the terrace. You can easily park your car at TOP Westerpark or Bentwout to immediately start your cycling route. Or get on your bike from the train, as there are several train stations around this route.
