Cycling route through the heart of Friesland
Terherne, Akkrum, Jirnsum
The pompeblêd, also called plompenblad or waterblad in Dutch, is the Frisian word for these heart-shaped leaves of plants such as the yellow plump, the white water lily and the water gentian. But the heart-shaped leaf is best known as a symbol of Friesland. So in the Frisian flag, you see seven pompeblêden. These refer to the Seven Frisian Sea Countries, the medieval name for the areas inhabited by the Frisians. Open your heart and let it be flooded by the Frisian waters in the heart of Friesland. In water sports village Terherne, you have beautiful views of the Sneekermeer lake. Another water sports village is Akkrum, the village of the giants Manke Meine and Kromme Knilles. The legend of these two giants lives on in the statue in the village. Step off here for the unique shops and cosy cafés and restaurants. The centre of Grou is also worth deviating from the junctions: you'll find quaint shops and lovely terraces along the waterfront. Jirnsum is a lovely quiet village, but one of the oldest villages on this route. It was founded as early as the 7th century. In the Frisian heartland, the many waters, meadows and of course the picturesque villages, each with their own harbour, sparkle. A combination that captures your heart. Note! You will encounter a cycle ferry along the way. It sails from 1 April to mid-October. Check the disembarkation time and the website for more information on the sailing schedule. Do you cycle the route when the ferry does not sail? Then cycle round via junctions 71-72-74-77-86-34-26-89-54-63-42-92 (or vice versa from the other direction). This does make the route about 20km longer. At Terherne, you'll find another ferry, which operates during the same period. Here, detouring is a lot less complicated. At junction 21 you cycle from 22 to 43 (or the other way round from the other direction).
