Hop on your stocking feet on your bike and be surprised by this Cycle route. In the beautiful Twente countryside, you will find two towns where the old craft of making wooden shoes is still practised. In Goor is the Klompenmuseum where you can learn all about the clog-making craft and find an extensive collection of worldly wooden shoes. Where exactly clogs come from is not entirely certain. Yet connoisseurs think they come not from the Netherlands but from France. Why precisely the Dutch are so famous for them is probably because they came all over the world with their trade, including on clogs. Few old clogs can be found because they were worn out and often thrown in the fireplace. Convenient, but this makes it difficult to trace where they came from. The oldest clog ever found comes from 1230 and was found in Amsterdam. A little further on, you are introduced to the village of Enter, also a real clog village. A hundred clog makers once worked here, making shoes for the Netherlands and abroad. Enter lies on the Regge river and besides clogs, zompen (an old type of ship) were also built here. Find out all about the history of this village and its crafts at the Klompen-Zompenmuseum. In summer, demonstrations of clog-making by hand are held every Wednesday afternoon in Goor and Enter.
