The municipality of Hoeksche Waard has only existed since 2019, but this collection of sixty polders is much older. Most of these polders were created after the Sint-Elizabethflood of 1421. A gigantic flood that wiped out most of the island. The oldest finds in this area come from prehistoric times and were found in Puttershoek, Mijnsheerenland and Westmaas. Did you know that Puttershoek dates back to the Stone Age? Excavations here have confirmed this. Discover more of the history of Hoeksche during this cycle route and interrupt your cycle route to visit Museum Hoeksche Waard at ‘t Hof van Assendelft. When you cycle across the bridge at cycle junction 26, you will arrive in Barendrecht. From here, you can get a good view of the Geertruida Agathapolder. This is one of the polders in Hoeksche Waard that does not stay dry, making it a favourite spot for various meadow birds. Learned enough about the Hoeksche Waard?
