Cycle route through leafy nature and country estates
Lochem, Vorden, Laren
This cycle route between Laren, Lochem, Vorden and Almen offers beautiful nature and magnificent estates. So you can enjoy the vast forests, meandering rivers and rolling meadows of the Achterhoek during the trip. Along the way, you will pass several estates, including Verwolde Estate and its corresponding Huis Verwolde from 1776. The house can still be admired in its original state. Verwolde is known for its beautiful gardens, which also include the thickest oak tree in the Netherlands with a girth of no less than 7.5 metres. Just before crossing the Twente Canal to Lochem, you pass the beautiful Ampsen estate. Once in Lochem, a visit to the Sint-Gudula church is a must. The church is the icon of the town centre and a national monument. The current church building dates back to a Gothic church from the 14th century, but was rebuilt several times afterwards. The church tower was added in 1478. The more you cycle towards the town of Vorden, the more castles and country houses you will encounter. Take for instance Buitenplaats 't Enzerinck, Kasteel Hackfort with the historic water mill of the same name and Kasteel Vorden. Each of these imposing buildings surrounded by magnificent country estates, a feast for the eyes! Another highlight of the cycle route is the area around Almen, where you cycle through the beautiful landscape along the Berkel river and can visit the medieval church. With this cycle route, you will discover the leafy nature and beautiful estates this part of Achterhoek has to offer. In the cosy villages and towns, you can shop for local specialities and regional products and of course enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of the Achterhoek countryside.
