Cycle route through watery Lelystad

Lelystad, which is rich in water, was not always accessible by bicycle, but thanks to the inventiveness of many people, you can now cycle across the seabed. The seabed has been dyked over and raised, making our country a great deal larger and safer. The Wortman pumping station, together with its 'colleagues' in Harderwijk and Ketelhaven, ensured that this part of the polder was reclaimed in nine months. After the creation of Eastern Flevoland in 1956, work started on Southern Flevoland three years later. Both parts are separated by the Knardijk, which is breached in two places by the Knardijksluizen. The people who worked on this project lived together in 'Het Stenen Kamp'. Nowadays, these houses have been renovated and the place, now called Werkeiland, is a popular attraction. On the way, you will also pass the Zuigerplasbos, where you will see a so-called Archimedes screw that helps to raise the water. Should something ever go wrong with Flevoland's outer dykes, the sluices can be closed so that Eastern and Southern Flevoland can be watered separately. If you want to know more about the history of Lelystad, stop by the Bataviawerf. Besides history, Lelystad has a lot more to show you. There are beautiful nature areas rich in birds and you can even go by boat to the uninhabited island Marker Wadden. Out and about with the family? Go on an adventure in the adventure woods, take a dip in the IJsselmeer at the largest beach of Lelystad and look around you on the way, because you will see animals almost everywhere.
