Would you like to taste a piece of the historical wealth of this region? Then cycle this route! Here, you will discover not only the city of Utrecht, but also a number of towns around it. For instance, you will cycle through Nieuwegein and past Bunnik. You will also cycle through De Bilt and Bilthoven. You will pass historical forts and castles that you can visit. Many of these forts are part of the Dutch Water Defence Lines. The forts used water to stop enemies. They had locks, dykes, canals, rivers and pumping stations, with which they could flood entire polders. The water was deep, but not deep enough to sail in. In this way, they managed to slow down enemies or even keep them out altogether. During the cycle route, you will pass a few of these Waterlinie forts. At the Waterliniemuseum, you will learn all about the history of these forts. Here, they show how people used such a fort to defend themselves and how exactly a Waterlinie worked. Experience and discover the beautiful historical spots of Utrecht. A lovely cycle route for a day out in the middle of the Netherlands.
