One cycle route, four nature reserves
Meijel, Grashoek
De Kwakvors, Marisberg, De Deurnsche Peel, Mariapeel and of course the Groote Peel: all beautiful nature reserves that you can cycle along or straight through. That says something about the beauty of this cycle route! You will cycle through a unique landscape full of vast peat bogs, mysterious swamps and wide heaths. This is an environment where nature and history go hand in hand – and where, with a little luck, you can spot cranes, roe deer or even a rare snake eagle. You will also pass through Meijel, a village with a turbulent past. Did you know that it has changed hands many times over the centuries? It was once Spanish, later Austrian and even briefly Belgian territory. Moreover, for centuries, Meijel fought bitterly with the neighbouring village of Helden over who was in charge of the rich peat soils in between. No small matter, because peat extraction meant economic power in those days. Perhaps the combative character was already in the ground, because decorative objects from Roman times have been found near Grashoek. Who knows what other stories this soil hides? As you cycle, dense forests alternate with open fields, fens and peat lakes that seem almost magical in certain lights. Enjoy the views and the viewpoints, and don't forget to hop off your bike every now and then. Park your bike, take a deep breath and let the tranquillity of the landscape sink in. This is a route not just to cycle, but also to experience.
