Nijmegen, Millingen aan de Rijn, Groesbeek
Two friends, Toos and Bertje, conceived of and walked the Pieterpad between 1978 and 1983. A long-distance hiking trail (500 km) from Pieterburen in the north of Groningen to Mount St Peter in the south of Limburg in 26 stages that are easily accessible by public transport and where you can spend the night. The landscape along the way is enormously varied, but equally beautiful everywhere. Where you can walk, you can also cycle, and we wouldn't be the Fietsnetwerk if we didn't map out a number of beautiful cycling tours for you inspired by the Pieterpad. We created 14 routes totalling almost 1300 km along all the places on the Pieterpad. We made them into loops so that you always return to your starting point. This is part 9 and leads from Millingen aan de Rijn to Gennep. Did you know that the Rhine does not enter the Netherlands at Lobith at all? The first point where the Rhine touches the Netherlands is at Spijk. It is only at Millingen aan de Rijn that the river is surrounded by Dutch territory. The inhabitants are very proud of that. Beek, mentioned in the same breath as Ubbergen, was named the greenest village in the Netherlands in 2007. There you will find Villa Severen with its Art Nouveau elements. In the Dutch Cultural Landscape Foundation's information centre, you can see the entire Dutch cultural landscape, from Texel to South Limburg, in eleven miniature gardens. Berg en Dal is known for its Africa Museum. Traces of what is thought to be a Roman aqueduct can also be found in the village. Groesbeek is home to the Freedom Museum and the Orientalis Museum, formerly the Holy Land Foundation.
