Discover the highlights around Rhenen on a beautiful cycle route through the region. A visit to Amerongen Castle should not be missed. This imposing castle was built in the 17th century and offers a glimpse into the life of the Dutch aristocracy. Next to the castle is the idyllic village of Amerongen. Molen Maallust, located in nearby Veenendaal, is also worth a visit. This beautiful windmill dates from 1882 and is still in operation. Here you can enjoy freshly ground flour and bread baked on site. Another highlight is Hoekelum Castle, located in Bennekom. This medieval castle is surrounded by beautiful parkland. From here, you have fantastic views of the surrounding forests and fields. Nature lovers are also sure to get their money's worth on this route. For instance, you cycle quite a bit through the Bennekomse bos, which includes arboretum Oostereng. A lot has been done here since 2011 to increase biodiversity. There is a good chance you will encounter a roe deer or, if you are lucky, a fox or a pine marten. The Renkums Beekdal originated in the penultimate ice age. Thanks to the abundance of water from the Veluwe and the many mills that once stood here, this area was important for the paper industry for a long time. Since 2013, the nature reserve has been restored as much as possible and forms a connecting zone between the Veluwe and the floodplains, allowing wildlife access to the floodplains. Finally, you can visit the Grebbeberg Military Field of Honour. Over four hundred Dutch and some one hundred and fifty German soldiers are buried here who died during the Second World War during the Battle of Grebbeberg. An impressive place to reflect on the consequences of war and the sacrifices made for our freedom.
