If you are looking for the typical Dutch landscape, this cycle route is really for you! The village of Purmerend flourished after 1340. Because it received city rights and market rights in the Middle Ages, the fishing town grew into a trading town. Purmerend is still known as the market town of the Netherlands. The Zaanse Schans is visited by some one and a half million people annually. Although it is historical heritage, it is also just a place where people live. Wormerveer owes its name to a ferry across the Zaan. That ferry service was already there in the 14th century. When about 500 years later there was a train connection to Wormerveer, the manufacturers lived on one side of the water and the factories were on the other bank. Therefore, a bridge was built and the ferry disappeared. Cycle through the picturesque towns of Purmerend and Wormerveer, in between you will encounter beautiful polder landscapes with many small waters and characteristic windmills.
