Cycle route along Sypesteyn Castle

Why is Loosdrecht divided into Oud-Loosdrecht and Nieuw-Loosdrecht? That has everything to do with churches. Oud-Loosdrecht had a church and Nieuw-Loosdrecht (which was then called Sijpe) had a chapel. The part with the old church became Oud-Loosdrecht, the part with the new church became... you get the idea. Near the Sijpe stood a farm, Sijpesteijn. The noble Sypesteyn family believed that the chapel in Sijpe was the castle chapel of their ancestral castle. Evidence for this has never been found. Nevertheless, at the beginning of the 20th century, squire Sypesteyn had a castle built on the site of the old farm. Sypesteyn Castle is not the only stately landmark on this route. Near the village of Kortenhoef, you cycle past a row of country houses and estates that lie side by side. A historic fort is also on the route. The Loosdrechtse Plassen are several lakes together. The old peat bog is now a wetland that attracts many birds, dragonflies and unusual aquatic plants. A beautiful area to cycle through, or to traverse with a trip on the bike boat.
