Cycle route Hardenberg and the Vecht
Hardenberg, Diffelen, Bergentheim
As a border town, Hardenberg was equipped with thick walls around 1230. That history of the town is well reflected in the three city walls, the first of which was built around 1230. The town wall, found next to the Stephanus church, has been renovated with parts of an excavation. One of the oldest cemeteries in the Netherlands is the Nijenstede cemetery. The exact year of its origin is not known, but it was already a churchyard before the inhabitants of Nijenstede moved to Hardenberg in 1127. Between 1362 and 1400, the church was built, dedicated to St Stephen. Near Bruchterveld used to be a large moorland with peat. You can still see some peat remnants left over after the area was reclaimed. At Diffelen, you discover the Vecht, where one of the nine weirs is located. From vantage point the Distelbelt you have a beautiful view of nature. At the village of Heemse, just before Hardenberg, you will find a pretty little church, which revives the old atmosphere of the past. Doesn't the ferry cross the Vecht?
