Coming for coffee in Joure is highly recommended: you will be a welcome guest! Moreover, the route takes you to beautiful water areas outside Joure with picturesque names like the Goaiingarypster Puollen and It Nannewiid. When you think of Joure, you think of Douwe Egberts. This big coffee supplier has its birthplace here: Douwe Egberts' father, Egbert Douwes, opened 'De Witte Os', a shop in colonial commodities, here in 1753. Coffee, tea and tobacco were the main commodities. Douwe took over the business, laying the foundation for the empire that is now the largest coffee company in the world. Today, you can still get coffee at 'De Witte Os' which is affiliated to museum Joure. In this special museum, in the first Douwe Egberts factory, changing exhibitions can be seen and various activities are organised. Besides coffee, you can also stock up on old-fashioned sweets and teas here. Other fun sights to stop off for are Goïngarijp's bell seat and both mills on the route. The Grevensmolen is a polder mill from 1860 and Penninga's mill a corn mill that has been serving Joure for more than a century. Originally, the latter mill was built as a paper mill in Westzaan.
