Cycle route along Frisian canals
Sneek, Terherne, Akkrum
The 17th century saw the emergence of barges, which carried passengers along the canals between the Frisian towns. The barges were often pulled by a horse, sometimes by people. The cycle route takes you from Terherne through the beautiful Frisian landscape and the charming town of Sneek. On the way, you cross the Sneekertrekvaart, also known as the Zwette, the Franekervaart and the Bolswardertrekvaart. A beautiful rural and watery route, with a pinch of cultural history! Terherne lies on the Sneekermeer lake. While cycling here, you'll have fantastic views of the water. The village also has an interesting history as a former trading centre, which is still visible in the old buildings and narrow streets. As you leave Terherne behind, you soon find yourself in the distinctive polder landscape. All around you see green meadows, lined by ditches that criss-cross the land like veins. Sneek is also known as the water sports city of Friesland. It is a vibrant place with a rich maritime history. Step off to admire the historic centre. You'll find nice pavement cafes to enjoy some culinary delights! Please note: there is a ferry on this route: the Terhernsterveer. It sails from 1 April to 15 October. In bad weather conditions, fog and wind force 7 or higher, it does not sail. If the ferry does not sail, you can skip Terherne. You continue cycling along the water to junction 22 where you return to the original route.
