The Lutterzand is a natural gem that has its origins in the late Middle Ages. Overgrazing and heather sod cutting created bare patches in the vegetation, giving the wind free rein and creating sand drifts. To counteract the sand drifts, large pines were planted, resulting in the beautiful pine forests you can see today. If you look at the banks of the Dinkel, you can even find sand layers that are up to 20 centuries old. You can recognise former moorland fires from the dark layers, showing that the area has seen many changes over the years. The nature reserve is largely formed by the Meuleman estate, which covers no less than 340 hectares. This estate is owned by the Twente textile family Scholten and is largely freely accessible. The Lutterzand offers more than just beautiful scenery. Indeed, the area balances on the Dutch-German border. Due to the hilly surroundings, you are guaranteed beautiful views over the landscape, which makes this area even more special. There is always something new to discover and admire in Lutterzand, and it is definitely worth spending some extra time here.
