Liberation route | Gateway to liberation
Bergeijk, Luyksgestel, Eersel
The Liberation Routes Brabant are eight cycle routes, spread throughout the province, that take you along the stories of World War II and the liberation. This cycle route shows how the Liberation began in Bergeijk in Brabant.
Cycle through the area where in September 1944 English scouts were the first allies to enter the Netherlands. At border crossing De Barrier in Bergeijk, they crossed the border as reconnaissance for Operation Market Garden. This spot is still remembered today as the 'Gate of Liberation'.
The scouts were able to advance almost as far as the river Dommel. This brought hope to the country, but a difficult battle followed before liberation was a fact.
During your cycle route through the Kempen region of Brabant, you will discover the scars of war in the beautiful landscape by looking at the many monuments commemorating downed aircraft and fallen soldiers.
