Landscape route around Kootwijk
Kootwijk, Radio Kootwijk, Garderen
Radio Kootwijk is located in a special and vulnerable nature reserve in the middle of the Veluwe. Immediately south of Kootwijk is the Kootwijkerzand, one of the largest areas of drift sand in Europe. This vast, open landscape with its characteristic sand plains and isolated pine forest forms a magical, almost unreal atmosphere. The Kootwijkerzand is a perfect example of nature's dynamism, where the sand is constantly moving and flora and fauna have adapted to dry conditions.
In the village of Kootwijk itself, you will enjoy a quiet, rural charm with its old farmhouses. Kootwijk has long played an important role in communication with overseas Dutch colonies thanks to the iconic Radio Kootwijk transmitter mast. You will undoubtedly see the giant cathedral and former transmitter mast during this route.
The surrounding area offers a diverse mix of forests, moors and sand drifts, where you can enjoy the silence and unspoilt nature. And although the villages you cycle through, such as Garderen and Nieuw Milligen, are only small; in the summer months the population is multiplied by the many tourists who come to enjoy these beautiful landscapes.
