In and around Slot Haamstede
Burgh-Haamstede, Renesse, Noordwelle
Slot Haamstede is a varied nature reserve. In addition to the beautiful castle, there is also a lovely castle forest and the adjoining Zeepeduinen are not to be sneezed at either. The area is also home to a herd of Shetland ponies that are herded twice a year for hoof care, but otherwise these peaceful animals have free play in the area. Through their hooves, they ensure that stretches of sand do not become overgrown, allowing sand beetles and sand bees to thrive here, and giving marram grass and eelgrass a chance to grow. The south coast of Schouwen offers space to nature as it used to be. Among others, the redshank can always be found here, as well as the silver plover, curlew, ruddy godwit, dunlin and knot. So feel free to step off to enjoy the birdlife!
