Cycle route along the Dinkel
Denekamp, De Lutte, Mekkelhorst
This beautiful Cycle route from Denekamp takes you along the picturesque river Dinkel, one of Twente's most beautiful watercourses. The Dinkel rises in Germany, between the village of Holtwick and the town of Coesfeld. It meanders through the landscape for 89 kilometres before flowing into the Vecht near Neuenhaus, again in Germany. Fun fact, the same Vecht enters the Netherlands near Gramsbergen as the Overijssel Vecht. The Dinkel meanders through forests, moors and vast landscapes, also on its path through the Netherlands. Along the river you will find a special art project: the Dinkelsteinen. These are 25 artworks placed at various locations along the river. Each artwork tells a story about the river, its history, nature and the people connected to it. They are made of different materials and together form a poetic ode to the Dinkel. On this Cycle route, you will pass five of these unique Dinkel stones. Along the way, you will also visit some special sights. At Country estate Singraven, you can enjoy the historic atmosphere of the country house and surrounding park. Nearby is the iconic Watermolen Singraven, a working cog that has been part of the area's water management since the Middle Ages. Not far from there, you will pass the Schuivenhuisje Tilligte, which plays an important role in regulating the water level in the Dinkel. The route takes you further to the Lutterzand, a nature reserve where the river flows freely through the sand and makes deep turns.
