Dutch cycle route along lakes and windmills

Do you fancy a cycle route with typical Dutch elements? Then this cycle route along the Westeinderplassen, the Braassemermeer and the Kagerplassen is an absolute must. Enjoy Holland waterland, green polders as far as you can see, organic farms and all those special windmills on this route full of Dutch scenes. From Hoofddorp, cycle along the Voor- and Achterkanaal canal towards Aalsmeer, where you can visit the historic garden right away. Here you get an overview of the horticulture for which Holland became so famous. You continue your route along the Westeinderplassen, an area of lakes connected by a network of small ditches. This pool, created by excavation for peat extraction, is home to pike, eel and catfish. There are as many as 50 marinas around these ponds. The Ringvaart canal connects this lake to the other lakes on this scenic route. Via the Leimuiderdijk, the route continues to the Braassemermeer, where the first windmill on the route also appears. The Googermolen is, in case of extreme flooding, still used today as an auxiliary pumping station for the Googerpolder. Through Roelofarendsveen and then the polders of Nieuwe Wetering, you cycle towards the Kagerplassen, a paradise for water sports enthusiasts. Sixteen shallow pools, marshes, windmills, beaches, nature reserves, farms and lots of special windmills: here you will enjoy the primeval Dutch landscape and everything that goes with it.
