Cycle route through fishing villages in North Holland's Waterland region

From the old center of Purmerend you will start your cycle route through a beautiful part of North Holland. Purmerend already came into existence in the 13th century; some 200 years later it obtained city rights. Purmerend grew rapidly in the following years due to the market. As a fishing village, many fish were traded here, as well as fruit and dairy products. Past farmlands and through waterland you continue your way to Volendam. Volendam is now best known for the large number of musicians who come from here, but it also has a rich history. This fishing village originated as early as the 14th century and is now very popular among tourists. See the old center, the authentic leaning houses and eat a fish on the quay overlooking the Markermeer. You continue cycling to Monnickendam. How this village got this unusual name is not entirely clear. In the 13th century, a group of monks from monastery Mariëngaarde in Friesland supposedly built a dam on the site of a small peat river. Around this dam, a village would eventually have sprung up: Monnickendam. Through the unique waterland and past charming villages, you will ride back towards Purmerend. You have about 45 kilometers in your legs, so you have earned something tasty!
