Cycle route along the historic Grebbelinie
Veenendaal, De Glind, Austerlitz
Start the cycle route at TOP Fort aan de Buursteeg. Besides parking facilities and catering, you will also find the Grebbelinie Visitor Centre here. Get to know the centuries-old military history of the line in the exposition room and then start your own discovery along the line. The Grebbelinie is originally a water line that runs from the Nederrijn near the Grebbeberg, via Veenendaal and Amersfoort to Spakenburg. For more than two hundred years, this garland of forts and line dykes formed the most important defence in the Netherlands. The line was flooded to keep out the enemy. Quartering, inundation, evacuation and battle have left countless traces and stories that are still visible in the picturesque places along the line. Old locks, concrete casemates, tank barriers and German bunkers provide an encounter with more than two centuries of national defence. During the cycle route, you will discover the traces hidden in the landscape. From the fortress, the route takes you through beautiful Renswoude, situated in the middle of a very Dutch landscape on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. You cycle past the special and impressive Renswoude Castle with its beautiful park. The white plastered back gives the building a real country house look, while the front with its towers is more reminiscent of a castle. Continue past the Pyramid of Austerlitz in Woudenberg. This was built in 1804 as a tribute to Napoleon Bonaparte. After a climb of 81 steps, you can enjoy a wonderful view from the top of the Pyramid.
