Boniface Cycle Route
Burgum, Dokkum, Damwâld
The theme of this cycle route revolves entirely around Boniface, a saint from history. Wynfreth, as Boniface was called at birth, was one of the most important Anglo-Saxon missionaries and church reformers in the Frankish Empire. On June 5, 754, he was gruesomely murdered with club blows during a missionary journey. Long after his death, the Boniface Chapel was built at the site of his martyrdom in the Frisian town of Dokkum. Add this special stop to your route to learn more about his history and visit the chapel. Starting in Burgum, you cycle through the beautiful, rural landscape of Friesland. Along the way, you’ll pass small villages and local farm shops where you can buy fresh products. Before reaching Dokkum, you’ll ride past the Bruinenberg nature museum and picturesque waterways. This combination makes the route particularly enjoyable: a tranquil environment with plenty of interesting spots to discover along the way. After passing the Mearmin mill, you’ll arrive in Dokkum. Here, you can not only visit the Boniface Chapel but also take a look at Museum Dokkum. After your visit, prepare for the return journey to Burgum. End your day at Restaurant De Pleats, where an extensive menu awaits to complete your cycling trip in a delicious way.
