Between Lek and Linge
Vianen, Leerdam, Everdingen
This refreshing cycle route takes you past the most beautiful places between the rivers Lek and Linge. Discover the surprising, historic towns of Vianen and Leerdam, each with its own character. At junction 20, make a small diversions to see the beautiful town of Ameide. Ameide was, by all accounts, one of the oldest towns in the county of Holland. Many of the historic buildings have been preserved in this picturesque town, so it has retained its historic character. A special aspect of this route are the wheels you encounter, such as the Wiel van Bassa and the Galgenwiel in Asperen. Wheels are the result of dike breaches, where water broke through the dike with such force that a deep washout occurred. After the hole in the dike was closed, the washout was left behind as a lake. These natural water features are not only a reminder of the vulnerability of the land in the face of water, but also of man's resilience and ingenuity to adapt and restore the landscape. Enjoy an oasis of tranquillity and magnificent flora and fauna at roach wheels, as well as in the Zouweboezem. Originally, the Zouweboezem was constructed for water management in the area. It served as a kind of catch basin to collect and regulate excess water from the polders to prevent flooding. The reeds that grew on the plots had a practical use: they were used for farm roofs. Today, the vast marshes and reed beds are an important habitat for marsh birds, including the black tern, water rail, moustache, and marsh harrier. Along the way, you will pass old farms and other unique locations for a stopover. Recharge yourself and your bike at one of the tasty Pit stops along the way. Have fun!
