The Hollandsche IJssel is a 20 km long river between Gouda and Krimpen aan den IJssel and flows into the Nieuwe Maas. For centuries, this river caused fear among local residents because they were afraid of flooding. After the flood disaster, a storm-surge barrier was built on the municipal boundary of Capelle aan den IJssel and Krimpen aan den IJssel. The Hollandsche IJssel could not be closed off with a dam because it is an important shipping route. That is why at the time a choice was made for a storm surge barrier with two movable gates suspended between large concrete towers. At the Algera Bridge, you can see this beautiful storm surge barrier. The Hollandsche IJssel merges with the Nieuwe Maas at Kralingseveer. Furthermore, during this cycle route you will come across some well-known stopping points in the region. For example, pay a visit to the Euromast or see the cube houses of Piet Blom in Rotterdam!
