Dwingeloo, Holtinge, Diever
Around 4400 BC, the Funnel Beaker people lived in Drenthe. They made earthenware cups and built tombs under monuments made of heavy boulders: the dolmens. These boulders, sometimes up to 40 tonnes, were brought from Scandinavia to the Netherlands by glaciers during the ice age. There are still 54 dolmens to be found in the Netherlands, none of them complete. This impressive cycle route takes you past a number of these dolmens, which you absolutely must have seen if you have been to Drenthe. Besides dolmens, you will also see the primeval nature of the Holtingerveld on this great cycle route and pass the historic towns of Dwingeloo and Diever. These village greens are centuries old and this is reflected in the cosy streets. This route of about 50 kilometres introduces you to the real Drenthe, its nature and history. In short: Drenthe at its best!
