The Amer is a river that forms the southern border of the Biesbosch. This has not always been the case. It used to be a wide tidal creek, created by the Sint-Elisabethflood of 1421 which completely swept away the village Drimmelen. After this, the Biesbosch as we know it today gradually came into being. The municipality of Drimmelen is also called the 'front yard of the Biesbosch' because it is situated on the Amer under the Biesbosch. Did you know that the harbour of the small town Drimmelen is one of the largest marinas of Western Europe? It is certainly worthwhile to stop and think about this when cycling past! Feel the fresh wind in your face as you cycle through the rural surroundings with beautiful country roads and dykes, such as the dyke between Drimmelen and Lage Zwaluwe with a view of the Biesbosch. Along the way, you will discover strongholds of the former Zuiderwaterlinie, a line of eleven fortified towns in Brabant that defended themselves with water. The Zuiderwaterlinie is the oldest, longest and most frequently used waterline in the Netherlands. Dive into history and enjoy a lovely day of cycling full of nature and history! Tip: Start your cycle route at TOP Lage Zwaluwe or in the harbour of Drimmelen. Here you will find ample parking space and you are directly on the junction route.
