This disputed area has seen its fair share of unrest over the years. Both the bishop of Utrecht and the duke of Gelre have looked at this land with an eager eye. The area was an integral part of the Nieuwe Hollandse Water Defence Lines, and even throughout the 20th century it remained the scene of a battle between conservationists and road builders in the lush forests of Amelisweerd. Fortunately, the battles have become a thing of the past, and today this piece of land invites peaceful cycle routes.
