Cycle route Water in the Betuwe
Geldermalsen, Buren, Rijswijk
A route full of water, water sports and Betuwe villages in the Rivierenland. Enjoy views over the Linge, the Lingenmeer, the Lower Rhine, the Amsterdam Rhine Canal, the Oude Rijn and the Wetering. The tranquillity of the flora- and fauna-rich floodplains, or the pleasant water sports life on ponds, lakes and rivers. A pleasure to cycle along and occasionally cross one of these waters, with or without a ferry! Check the disembarkation times for ferry schedules. Should the ferry between Tiel and Wamel not sail (on Sundays out of season), follow junctions 82-83-85-50 from junction 44 and continue on the route. Or vice versa if you ride the route in the other direction. For some much-needed variety, this route through the middle of the Betuwe also offers a choice of cosy towns and villages, each with its own special features. The cosy and picturesque Buren that has always had a close relationship with the Van Oranje Nassau family. King Willem Alexander participated in the 1986 Elfstedentocht under the name W.A. van Buren, after the small town of the same name. At the Museum Buren and Oranje, you will discover much more about the connection between the Oranges and Buren. Tiel is the fruit city of the Betuwe, known for Flipje and the regional museum. But also of the special old facades, the cosy streets and ditto squares. Echteld is home to Wijenburg Castle. Geldermalsen has it all; castles, a marina, its own blossom tour and winding ling dikes. Furthermore, the route passes Wadenoijen, Maurik, Lienden, Kesteren and Beneden-Leeuwen. All with a mill, castle or imposing church. So there is plenty of everything on this typically Dutch route through the Midden-Betuwe region. If you don't want to cycle this route in one day, bring a tent and spend the night at Camping de Fruitboom or without a tent at Van der Valk.
