Cycle route between Oosterschelde and Westerschelde

With this route, you will really get to know the eastern part of Zuid-Beveland. Clasped between the Oosterschelde and Westerschelde estuaries, Zeeland's peninsula has a rich history but has also seen many disasters. In the Middle Ages, Zeeland was reclaimed and less and less land overflowed. Zeeland's clay proved very suitable for agriculture and you can still see that today. On this route, you will find a fruit cultivation museum, several country shops and mills that still benefit from this. The island has also experienced several floods. Everyone has heard of the 1953 flood but in 1530, during the Sint-Felix flood, a large part of the island disappeared in the waves. You can see how people dealt with this and how the flourishing mussel and oyster trade came into being after this at the OosterscheldeMuseum in Yerseke. Besides Yerseke, which is thus famous for its mussels and where a real mussel auction takes place, you will visit places like Waarde, Kruiningen, Kapelle and Wemeldinge. In all these picturesque villages we selected a Pit stop and of course we will lead you past the nature reserves along the Ooster and Westerschelde estuaries. Between junctions 97 and 85 you will find several parking places, making it an excellent place to start the route there.
