Cycle route Architecture in Limburg
Valkenburg, Gulpen, Slenaken
A beautiful cycle route through the breathtaking Limburg countryside. Along the way, you will encounter all kinds of architectural highlights from the period between the 12th and 20th centuries. The Reusch of Schimmert, for example, by Wielders. It was built in 1926 to store some 1150 cubic metres of water. Now it serves as a knowledge centre for products from the region. Special objects include the rainbow spiral by Hundertwasser and the Hedge House at Wijlre Castle by Arets. Johan Arnold had this magnificent castle built in 1652. The service houses, stables and carriage house only followed in the 18th century. You also cycle past Schaloen castle and the castle gardens of Oud-Valkenburg. In the castle gardens of Oud-Valkenburg, you imagine yourself in an oasis of greenery, splendour and glory. Beautiful flowers and plants fill the garden. Imagine yourself back in the days of knights and castles, while the scent of medicinal herbs and an apiary enter you. In Gulpen stands the impressive Glass Pyramid by an unknown architect. The names of the architects of the Wittem monastery and the Catharinakapel in Lemiers are also unknown. As these buildings are somewhat older, there is no documentation of these.
