The Golden Age left deep impressions in Amsterdam's architecture, and this is reflected on this fascinating cycle route. Take for instance the imposing Scheepvaartmuseum, originally designed by Stalpaert in 1656 as a warehouse for the Admiralty. During its renovation early this century, Van der Pol of DOK Architects gave it a modern twist with glass and metal, enhancing its sturdy character. From Hoofddorp, the cycle route takes you past architectural icons towards Amsterdam. You pass the futuristic Eye Film Museum, designed by Vienna-based Delugan Meissl Associated Architects, and admire the striking NEMO building by Alberts and Van Huut. Cuypers and Van Gendt's Central Station is an absolute eye-catcher, and the route would not be complete without a stop at the Amsterdam School, culminating in De Klerk's Museum Het Schip. Along the way, you'll also pass J.A. Beijerinck's impressive neo-Gothic pumping stations - a touch of 19th-century grandeur that modern architects still find very impressive today.
