Cycle route Battle of the Grebbeberg

The Battle of the Grebbeberg was part of World War II and is known for the fierce fighting between German and Dutch soldiers. East of Rhenen lays the Grebbelinie, where the Dutch army (2,500 soldiers) tried with all their might to hold back the German army (23,000 soldiers). This German attack began on May 11, 1940, leading to a bloody battle around the Grebbeberg. The Dutch soldiers held out for three days, but on the fourth day, the Grebbelinie was evacuated. A total of 382 Dutch soldiers and 259 German soldiers lost their lives in this battle. This cycle route starts in Veenendaal and takes you through the beautiful landscapes of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park toward Rhenen. Along the way, you’ll encounter several locations that played a key role in the Battle of the Grebbelinie. Take some time to enjoy a snack and drink on a terrace to recharge for the rest of the route. You’ll need some energy for the occasional steep climb, but the effort is worth it: this ride offers stunning scenery and a wealth of history!
