Anyone who sees the historic part of Elburg with its dead straight streets and the old gate will know for sure: Elburg is a town. It already was in the 13th century, when Otto II of Gelre granted Elburg city rights. Unfortunately, that right was taken away from them again in 1310: As it turned out, Otto had no authority at all and had also failed to seek royal permission. So for two years, Elburg was a village again, until Reinald I returned the city rights. In 1488, Elburg threatened to lose its city rights again thanks to Stadholder Adolf of Nassau. Elburg was only allowed to keep its rights if it supplied soldiers for Maximilian's imperial army. Cycle past Museum Elburg and discover the history for yourself! Elburg lies on a remote corner of the Drontermeer, the easternmost Veluwe Lake. As you cycle along the lake, you have a chance to see many different birds. Raptors such as the Sparrowhawk and Marsh Harrier are regularly spotted here but an Osprey has also been spotted in the region. Take a look at the ducks you see, they are more different species than you think! This route includes not only history but also various gardens. For instance, you can pause at Hannekes Pluktuin, where you can pick the most beautiful bunches. Or make a pit stop at A. Vogel, where you can walk a barefoot trail or learn more about the gardens' philosophy of healing flowers and plants in the visitor centre.
