Cycle route around the Veluwemeer to Elburg
Nunspeet, Hierden, Elburg
In the past, Nunspeet was not really an ideal place to live in: the village was threatened on the north side by the Zuiderzee and on the south side by encroaching sand drifts. Around 1900 people began to fight the latter by planting trees. Later, when the Zuiderzee was reclaimed, Nunspeet became a peaceful place to live and recreate. You can discover this on this cycle route along the rippling waters of the Veluwemeer. In the Noord-Veluws Museum in Nunspeet, you will find stories of painters and inhabitants of the Veluwe between 1880 and 1950 through art. Elburg is a small fortified town that was also part of the Hanseatic League. When you are near Elburg, you can take a slight detour from junction 30 towards junction 03 to get to the centre of Elburg. The cosy town centre is full of nice restaurants, unique shops and interesting museums. The Grote of Sint Nicolaaskerk is also a must-see during a city walk. A little above Hierden, you can cycle to a bird hide that offers a view of the Veluwe Lake. Take your time to look around and who knows, you might even see a kestrel or a white-tailed eagle! Please note: a cycle ferry runs between Biddinghuizen and Hulshorst (junctions 60 and 49). For the sailing times of the ferry, go to https://veerponten.nl/. Does the ferry not run? Then you can reverse via nodes 49-39-09-01-35-29-11-10-46-90-43-18 (or the other way round) and continue the route again. This is 8.8 kilometres extra.
