Kampen, Hattem, Zwolle
In the city centre of Hattem you can feel, taste and smell the historical atmosphere. The town was only granted city rights in 1299, allowing it to join the Hanseatic League in the same year. Thanks to the many historical buildings and the 14th-century Dijkpoort, you can imagine yourself in Hanseatic times. Take a walk along Knorrenburgerstraat 2 at the foot of the Dijkpoort: this warehouse is one of the best preserved buildings from the Hanseatic era. Of all the Dutch Hanseatic cities, Kampen benefited the most from the alliance. Although the city only joined the Hanseatic League in 1441, it became the richest and most powerful Dutch Hanseatic city thanks to its favourable location on the Zuiderzee and the IJssel. The famous Kamper cogs could enter Germany quickly thanks to the IJssel, while on the other side the Zuiderzee lay beckoning. This brought Kampen much prosperity. The city's rich facades and the Koornmarkt gate still bear witness to this. In fact, you even pass by three Hanseatic cities. As soon as you follow the IJssel from Kampen, you automatically arrive in the old centre of Zwolle. Note! Between Zwolle and Hattem, the route crosses a ferry. The ferry operates from the end of April to the end of October. Check the sailing times on the site or cycle via the junctions: * From Zwolle from junction 92: 90-94-58 * From Hattem as from junction 58: 94-90-92 (about 5 km extra cycling)
