This cycle route invites you for a leisurely ride through the lush Veluwe countryside, while immersing yourself in the region's rich history. Cycling through fresh, green forests and over rolling hills, you will discover the hidden gems of this special area. In the charming village of Elspeet, the past comes alive. During the Second World War, this village played a crucial role. In the year 1944, night drops took place on Noorderheide, supplying the resistance with weapons, ammunition and medicine. These precious goods were collected in the dead of night and taken to a central location, where they proved to be of great value to the resistance movement. A little further on, Staverden, awarded city rights in 1298, reveals another fascinating chapter in history. Count Reinoud of Gelre dreamed of establishing a thriving town here. Although his ambitious plans never fully came to fruition, he did leave the majestic Staverden castle and several ancillary buildings. This historic decision gave Staverden the unique privilege of keeping white peacocks, whose feathers became a prestigious symbol on the helmets of the Counts of Gelre. Today, the castle and its surrounding estate are an attraction for many, where the graceful white peacocks still roam freely. Even now, the King's commissioner still receives peacock feathers, a tradition that has stood the test of time.
