Veendam flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries as an important peat colony. Since the town developed along canals, there was an early emphasis on green spaces and tree-lined waterways. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the importance of city parks grew, particularly as places of leisure for the elite of the former society in Veendam. This led to the creation of parks such as Julianapark (1913) and the Hertenkamp (1915-1920). With the growing population in the 20th century, there was an increasing demand for places where people could walk, exercise, and relax. This resulted in the development of larger parks, such as Borgerswold, a vast 450-hectare area designed in the 1970s as a recreational space. Here, residents could escape the town for a while and enjoy nature and outdoor activities. Many of Veendam’s parks serve not only a recreational purpose but also hold historical significance. For instance, Lintparkje on Vijverlaan lies along the former STAR railway line, while Julianapark and the Hertenkamp still feature monumental buildings that serve as reminders of the town’s past. As a result, nature was not only seen as a place for relaxation but also as a means of preserving and showcasing Veendam’s rich history. This combination of green landscapes, nature-based recreation, and historical preservation has earned Veendam its nickname: the Park City of Groningen.
