Tiel, Geldermalsen, Buren
Tiel, once an important Hanseatic city, is now a city full of historic buildings and monuments. In 1402, Tiel became a member of the Hanseatic League, an alliance of merchants and cities that worked together to promote their trading interests and strengthen their economic position. Although Tiel lost its position within the Hanseatic League over time, being counted as an annex of Nijmegen, the historical buildings and monuments in the city still testify to its glorious past as a trading town. Along the way, you pass several castles and manor houses that remind you of a time of knights and princesses. In Geldermalsen, there was already a castle called Ravesteyn in the 11th century, which was rebuilt in the 19th century by Edmond Willem van Dam van Isselt, later chairman of the Lower House. Although the castle was unfortunately sold and demolished in 1916, there are still plenty of beautiful monuments to admire along the route. Another town you pass along the way is Buren, with more than 150 municipal and national monuments that are well worth a visit. And then, of course, there is Tiel, with the Ambtmanshuis and the Gotische Huis, both of which recall Tiel's glory days as a trading town. If you cycle further, you will also pass the border post at the Havendijk between the Tielerwaard and the Neder-Betuwe. But this route offers more than just rich history. Cycling along the Waaldijk, you will enjoy kilometres of breathtaking views over the majestic Waal and its vast floodplains. The floodplains are home to many rare plants and animals, such as the great egret and the beaver. Cycle along the river banks and watch nature unfold before your eyes. The fruit growing area you cycle through offers something beautiful to enjoy every season. From the blossoms in spring to the harvest in autumn, the colours and scents of nature surround you.
