Cycle route along the Ooijpolder

Along the river Waal you will find the Ooijpolder nature reserve, an area that until 2005 was used as an overflow when the Waal flooded. Now it is a nature reserve where bitterns, warblers and black terns nest. You can also spot konik horses and galloway cattle and all kinds of insects. For the best view of the entire area, climb the watchtower. And if you look far enough, you can even see Germany. The village of Berg en Dal is the counterpart to the flat Ooijpolder. The village is not called this for nothing, but the beautiful wooded area makes up for this. Roman artefacts are regularly found in Nijmegen, the oldest city in the Netherlands. The city was already inhabited by Roman soldiers at the beginning of our era. Emperor Trajan not only gave the city city rights, but also a name: Ulpia Noviomagus Batavorum.
