Doetinchem, Ulft, Terborg
Old industry, stately castles and unique nature alternate in this part of the Achterhoek. The iron industry has left its mark here, but noble families also left their stamp on the landscape. Along this route you will discover the history of the region, interspersed with green vistas and wetlands. Ulft was once the beating heart of the Dutch iron industry. In 1753, iron ore was already being smelted here, a craft that characterised the region. The old factory halls of the DRU Industrial Park are a reminder of that time, even though they now have a completely different function. In Terborg, Castle Wisch watches over the landscape, a historic stronghold that was already mentioned in 1285 and where the influential Lords of Wisch once ruled. Doetinchem and the surrounding area are home to even more traces of the past. Castle Slangenburg, with its stately avenues and beautiful gardens, is a charming place to hop off. But the Zumpe, a special marshland area full of rare plants and birds, is also worth a stop. And for those who love the water, the Stroombroek recreational lake is within easy reach, ideal for a short break. Even the hamlets around Doetinchem have their own story to tell. Cycle through Warm and Ziek (sick) and be surprised by these unusual names. History is there for the taking here – and cycling is the best way to experience it.
